eSIM Feature in Android 13

With eSIM one can use carrier profile of SIM card without keeping a physical SIM card in the phone. Embedded SIM were first introduced in the year 2020. The drawback of eSIM was that you could use only one profile at once in the device.

Google is now working for Multiple Enabled Profiles. With this feature one can use two profiles on the same device. This means two Profiles can be used on the same device simultaneously with one single eSIM.

Everything will be at the software level and no hardware changes will be required on the existing devices. Multiple logic interfaces will create an independent connection between the SIM profile and the MODEM of the mobile phone.

Some of you might think that why don’t the manufacturers come up with second eSIM slot in the device. This will spoil the idea of minimalist technology, unnecessary space will be used.

Google is believed to bring this multiple profile support on eSIM in Android 13. Before launching this feature fully Google is planning to launch 6 beta versions first. After successful testing it will launch it fully.

Google will also add APIs to Android open Source Project that will enable the carrier apps to fetch information about the logical and physical interfaces apart from the SIM profiles. Sources says that Google was testing it on the Pixel hardware.
